Production Process of Combed Cotton Yarn
RAW COTTON SELECTION
Only high-quality, long-staple cotton fibres are selected for combed yarn production. Popular varieties include Egyptian cotton, Pima cotton, Supima cotton, and other long-staple cultivars.
Key quality parameters for selection include fibre length, strength, uniformity, micronaire (fineness), and low contamination.
OPENING & CLEANING
The raw cotton bales are opened using bale openers.
Machines like blow room systems clean the cotton to remove foreign matter (dust, leaves, seeds) and large impurities.
This step ensures initial blending of fibres and prepares them for further processing.
CARDING
In the carding process, fibres are separated, aligned roughly, and converted into a thin web that is condensed into a sliver.
This process removes a portion of the short fibres (typically below 12 mm) and residual impurities.
Carded slivers form the input material for the combing stage.
DRAWING (FIRST PASSAGE)
Several carded slivers are combined and drawn to produce uniformity in linear mass (thickness).
Drawing machines help align fibres further in a parallel arrangement to reduce variations.
COMBING
This is the critical differentiator in combed yarn production.
Combing machines precisely comb out short fibres (typically less than 16 mm), neps (fibre entanglements), and residual impurities.
The result is a superior sliver with longer, more aligned, and cleaner fibres.
This process removes 15–25% of the initial fibre mass, improving yarn smoothness and strength.
DRAWING (SECOND PASSAGE)
The combed sliver is again passed through a drawing frame to ensure uniformity and prepare the fibre for roving.
The objective is to create slivers of consistent thickness and fibre alignment for smooth downstream processing.
ROVING
The sliver is attenuated into a thinner strand called a roving.
A slight twist is added to provide strength and facilitate handling.
Roving frames (also called simplex machines) help in fine pre-drafting before final spinning.
SPINNING
The rovings are finally spun into yarn on ring spinning frames or compact spinning systems.
Compact spinning is preferred for combed cotton as it further reduces hairiness and enhances yarn strength, lustre, and softness.
Twist level, spinning speed, and yarn count (thickness) are adjusted based on the application (e.g., 30s, 40s, 60s combed yarn).
WINDING & CLEARING
The final yarn is wound onto cones, cheeses, or bobbins using precision winding machines.
Electronic yarn clearers remove faults such as thick, thin places, neps, and slubs to ensure superior yarn quality.
